Heat Alerts in Pakistan – What You Need to Know
Last week when a new heatwave was reported, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued heat-related alerts based on extreme weather condition. These alerts are helpful for people to stay safe during weather emergency.
Extreme Heat Warning is issued when extremely high temperatures are expected or ongoing. People are advised to:
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat (11 AM to 4 PM)
- Drink more of fresh water or lemon-water
- Stay indoors in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place
- Take care of elders and children
Extreme Heat Watch is issued when a severe heatwave is expected in near future. People are advised to:
- Prepare to limit outdoor work or travel in day time
- Plan to stay in cool areas
- Arrange to stay with family or friends who have air conditioning or under roofs which are heat-proofed.
Heat Advisory is issued for hot conditions that may affect health. People are advised to:
- Reduce outdoor time in day time
- Drink more of fresh water or lemon-water
- Rest in shaded or ventilated areas
